Social Sustainability Issues - Access to Information

Austria is a highly developed country, that is ranked in 4th place on the UN Sustainability Development Goals country ranking. However, access to information has been a challenge for years.

As part of a university course on social sustainability, I designed a 4-page hand-out explaining the current situation in Austria.

WORK PROCESS

This is a typical design process for digital products like this.

Task, target group, time frame

  • I start with looking at whats the task and in the case of a university project I examinate the examination criteria to get a feeling of what is actually required.

  • I take a look at the target group. Is is it my colleagues, only the professor or a wider audience. If I personally know the audience group, I make some notes on characteristics and preferences of e.g. one specific lecturer.

  • I look at the possible time frame. Is it a last-minute project or do I have time to dive super deep into it. Based on the time-frame I choose a design platform and the overall scope.

    • When designing digital hand-outs I usually prefer to work with Canva, as this is an easy to use platform that has enough choices for a project like this.

      • If I need specific icons or other graphics I either use copy-right free ones or design them myself on canva or with one of the adobe cloud softwares, eg. indesign.

      • In rare cases I digitally draw them on my IPad, such as the ones I am using on the main page of this portfolio

Research

  • I create a "Scope doc" where I copy-paste facts, texts, graphs etc. that I might want to use.

    • This process is somewhat messy, and results usually in a word document that looks like this

Sketches

  • During and after the research phase I get started with simple pen & paper sketches, that function as a first extualisation of my ideas.

  • Usually I do a view of them and start to think where what information should be placed and if I need some more research.

Designing, writing, evaluating and 🔁

  • Now the actual design work starts. Based on the "Scope doc" I start to design the final product, write the content and evaluate it.

  • These three steps are done in iterative circles until the finished end product is done
