Work Example: Diversity Project

Internship Project: Newsletter, Workshops & Podcast

As part of my internship during my bachelor's in Educational Science, I designed a diversity training for the Learning Design team at LearnChamp.

The project "Diversity in e-learning" included workshops to reflect the learning designer's individual practices, a collection of best practice examples, and a weekly newsletter.

As a result of this project, diversity-sensitive aspects, especially gender-appropriate language, were specifically listed as a core skill of the learning design team. This was presented to the sales team as a factor in increasing revenue and quality of future projects.

Learners Journey

The learner's journey started with a welcome mail, followed by a weekly newsletter on different topics.

All newsletters were published on the internal Wiki pages for further research.

After 4 weeks, a follow-up workshop was organized which included brainstorming & discussion sessions on how to make e-learning courses more diverse. Afterwards, Diversity-bingo pages were handed out and a guide based on the discussion and project content was created.

Newsletters & Wiki posts

Topics: gender, background, age, disabilities

Structure

Provocative Statement

To engage the reader, a provocative statement or a question was stated.

Eg. "Just use different skin colors that is enough diversity"

Short introduction on why the topic is relevant in relation to learning design.

Eg. being aware of differences in terms of culture and ethnographic background needs to be actively thought of in the design process, to prevent unconscious bias.

Graphical illustration

Graphics from Elise Gravel were used since they illustrate diversity on different topics.

Solutions, Ideas & self-reflection questions

A few tips on what to do & self-reflection questions were added.

Eg. Where do I feel like I belong culture-wise?

Ressources

Links to the Wiki, interesting readings or practical sites

Eg. Emojipedia to research symbols and their international meaning.

Outcomes & Next Steps

  • All Newsletters were turned into internal Wiki pages and presented in a company-wide internal meeting along with a diversity-bingo activity.

  • A gender guide was developed to guide newcomers and other teams on how to use diversity-sensitive language.

  • A presentation for the sales team was created to highlight the core competency of the company in developing diverse e-learning courses.

  • Internal discussions on gendering practices were started, which led to a company-wide gendering strategy and rework of all marketing and sales texts.
